Add a QR code to your Canva design
There are 2 ways to put a QR code on a Canva design: Canva's own QR tools inside the editor, or a code made with this Canva QR code generator and uploaded as an image. Both scan the same way. Pick on what you need once the design is printed.
How to make a QR code in Canva
Canva's help describes 2 QR tools, both under Apps or Elements in the editor:
- Static QR Codes: enter a URL, optionally set the colors and margin, then Save. The link is fixed for good, and the code carries no Canva logo.
- Dynamic QR codes: pick a pattern, enter a URL and Save. You can change the destination later without reprinting. On the Free, Pro and Education plans, Canva adds its logo to these codes by default.
Canva's help also lists what depends on the plan: scan counts in Insights, expiry dates and letting collaborators edit a code come with Canva Business, Enterprise and Nonprofit. By default, only the person who created a code can edit its link, even when others can edit the design.
When a QRplify code is worth it instead
- Scan counts without a business plan: a free QRplify account adds 1 dynamic code with 1,000 scans a month, showing when, where and on what device people scan.
- Edits after printing, from your own account: the code lives in your QRplify account, apart from the design file, so you keep control of where it points whoever designed the flyer.
- No Canva account: the static code above needs no account anywhere. Download it and use it in Canva, Word, a print shop's template or a slide deck.
- 1 code on many designs: the same code file goes on the poster, the flyer and the menu, and a dynamic one updates all of them at once.
If none of these matter for your design, Canva's static tool does the job and you can stay in the editor.
Put a QRplify code into Canva
- Make the code: paste your link above and style it.
- Download a PNG: at the largest size offered. Canva takes PNG uploads under 50MB.
- Upload it to Canva: add the file to your uploads in the editor, then drag it onto the design.
- Size it and leave space: keep a clear margin around the code, and keep it at least about 2 cm wide for a short link. The minimum QR code size guide covers longer links and longer distances.
Canva also takes SVG uploads, as long as the file meets its SVG rules, such as staying under 3MB. A PNG is the quicker route.
Design rules that keep it scanning
- Dark on light: a darker code on a lighter background scans most reliably. More in do QR codes have to be black and white.
- A flat spot: place the code on a plain area, never over a photo or a gradient.
- No crop, no stretch: resize from a corner so the code stays square, with its margin intact.
- Test the export: scan the downloaded PDF or a printed proof, not the editor preview.
How to create it
- Paste your link: the page, menu, form or booking link the design should open.
- Style it: match the design's colors and add a frame label such as "Scan to book".
- Download: PNG for Canva and screens, SVG for print shops.
- Test before you print: scan the exported design on 2 phones.
FAQs
Can I make a QR code in Canva for free?
Yes. Canva's help describes its Static QR Codes as the same on every plan, and its dynamic codes as available on web and mobile. Scan counts, expiry dates and collaborator editing need Canva Business, Enterprise or Nonprofit.
Can I edit a Canva QR code after printing?
A dynamic one, yes: change its URL and the printed code follows. A static one, no: Canva fixes its link for good. Changing how a code looks always means reprinting.
Do Canva QR codes expire?
Canva's help says not unless you set an expiry date, which the Business, Enterprise and Nonprofit plans can do on dynamic codes. A static code from this page never expires. More in do QR codes expire.
Can I upload an SVG QR code to Canva?
Yes, when the file meets Canva's SVG upload rules, such as a size under 3MB. A PNG downloaded at the largest size is the simpler choice.
Can I see how many people scanned my Canva QR code?
In Canva, scan counts live in Insights on the Business, Enterprise and Nonprofit plans. A dynamic QR code on a free QRplify account records when, where and on what device people scan.
Why does my QR code not scan after I placed it in Canva?
Usually the colors, the size or a missing margin. Use a dark code on a light background, keep space on every side, and make it bigger. Then scan the exported file again.
